If you decide to foster, you will be providing a very valuable service which will enable many deserving greyhounds to find loving homes. There is nothing more important to our work than families willing to provide a temporary home for a greyhound awaiting adoption.
There is no financial cost to you. We provide a crate, dog food, and all medical care. You provide your time, patience, and love to help your foster greyhound adapt to his or her new life. As a foster parent, you will help acclimate your foster greyhound to a home environment in the following ways:
- Housetrain your foster greyhound. Generally, this is not a difficult process since he or she is already crate trained.
- Help your foster greyhound learn to climb stairs, avoid falling into the swimming pool, walk on tile floors, and cope with mirrors and glass doors.
- Help your foster greyhound learn to walk quietly by your side on a leash (most greys are already pretty good at this.)
- Help your foster greyhound learn not to steal things from the kitchen counter, beg at the table, or hop on the furniture.
- Help your foster greyhound learn to play with toys.
- Help your foster greyhound transition from track food to dry dog food.
- Help your foster greyhound learn to live harmoniously with other family pets.
- As a greyhound foster parent, it would be helpful if you could, at times, transport your greyhound to and from meet-and-greets and vet appointments.
Many foster parents end up adopting their foster greyhounds, so we are constantly needing new foster homes. If you have love to give and truly want to help the greyhounds, please ask us about fostering. We will provide you with all the information you need to be a successful foster parent.
